Golden Girls star Bea Arthur dies
Beatrice Arthur star of the hit comedy Maude in the 70’s and The Golden Girls in the 80’s has died. She died peacefully in her sleep at her Los Angeles home according to a family spokesperson. Ms. Arthur was 86 years old and had been battling cancer.
Before landing the role of Maude she had success on Broadway as well as the big screen. She won a Tony award for her role in the hit Broadway play Mame in 1965. The show Maude was a spin off of the Norman Lear hit sitcom All in the Family in which she played Maude, Edith Bunker’s cousin. Maude ran from 1972-1978 and she had 5 Emmy nominations and one win for the role.
Her next hit sitcom was The Golden Girls which ran from 1985-1992. She had four more Emmy nominations for her role of Dorothy Zbornak and won one time for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series.
